Book artist and critic Buzz Spector made a number of works exploring memory, loss and the role of the book, using torn pages. I'm a great fan of Spector's work, in particular A Passage, published by Granary Books in 1994. His structures and themes struck a deep chord with me when my father was in hospital having heart surgery, and Some Thoughts is an expression of both the hopes and fears of that time. The image of my father and I, from a birthday celebration long after the succesful operation, is joyful yet fragile, a cherished memory ever in danger of disappearing or distortion.
